With a promising Real Madrid side, Spain enjoyed a promising World Cup campaign in 1986 and coach Miguel Munoz was duly appointed for the next European Championship two years later.Qualifying from a group comprising Austria, Romania and Albania went smoothly and Spain qualified in a tough Group A alongside Denmark, Italy and West Germany, and the campaign got off to a good start with an entertaining 3-2 win over the Danes, all goals scored by Real Madrid players. Spain failed to impress in their other group matches, losing 1-0 to Italy and 2-0 to West Germany.
